He studied two further years at the Academy of Florence, followed by two years at the Repin Academy in St Petersburg. He is one of the few Western Europeans to have studied at this academy, which has an almost mythical status amongst artists.
Learning classic methods from the veteran Russian painter Michael Michaelovich Pimanov, Alexander developed his own style - a unique fusion between the Florence and Russian techniques. His talent and craft soon became noticed and he began to receive commisions from all over Europe and the Americas.
